Timely Screening is Key to Assessing Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Overview

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an umbrella term that encompasses a range of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. These conditions include coronary artery disease, heart failure, stroke, arrhythmias, and more. CVDs continue to be a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, imposing a significant burden on healthcare systems and economies. 1 out of 4 deaths in India are due to CVDs.1 However, the good news is that many cardiovascular diseases can be prevented or managed effectively with early detection and appropriate interventions. Timely screening plays a crucial role in identifying individuals at risk of developing CVDs, enabling healthcare professionals to implement preventive strategies and personalized treatment plans. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of timely screening of CVD and its impact on reducing CVD-related health risks.

Screening for cardiovascular diseases

Several screening methods are employed to assess an individual’s cardiovascular disease risk.

Blood Tests: Lipid profile tests measure cholesterol levels, which are key indicators of CVD risk. High levels of LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) and low levels of HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) are associated with increased risk. Other parameters, including triglycerides, cholesterol, and cardiac markers, such as CK-MB, CK-NAC, etc. also help determine a person’s risk for developing CVDs. Higher than normal levels of CK-MB indicate inflammation of the heart muscle or heart attack risk. High levels of CK-NAC in the blood help assess and monitor damage to the heart.

Apart from these, other methods include:

  • Regular blood pressure checks to help identify hypertension
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to identify irregular heart rhythms and other abnormalities
  • Techniques like echocardiography and coronary calcium scans to detect structural or functional abnormalities

Transasia’s offerings to safeguard Cardiac Health

Transasia Bio-Medicals Ltd. is India’s number 1 in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) company and offers a wide range of highly sensitive and specific Erba reagents that help to detect, and monitor the severity of cardiac diseases and predict their future risk. These reagents are useful to test for cardiac markers, such as cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, CK-MB, CK-NAC, and several other parameters. These reagent kits are intended for processing blood samples on advanced semi- and fully-automated Clinical Chemistry analyzers of the EM and XL series.

Prioritizing regular screenings and adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can go a long way in reducing the burden of cardiovascular diseases and enhancing one’s overall well-being.
